Beware! Trick questions employers ask during interviews

Published

on

During interviews, employers will ask questions to see how bad you want the job and to see what your work ethic is like.  These questions seem simple enough and straighforward, but beware of how you answer.  Always be honest, but steer clear of negativity and divulging to much information.

  • How long do you plan on staying with this company?

This is a question that weeds out any applicants that are using the job to fill their resume.  They want to see how committed you are to this position and company.

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

Once again, this question is evaluating your loyalty and committment.

  • What bothers you about your coworkers or bosses?

Never speak negatively about a coworker or boss.  If anything, it will reflect badly upon you.

  • If you won the lottery, would you still work?

This question is testing how hard you work and if you are willing to put in the effort.

  • Describe the perfect work environment.

This is basically asking, how needy are you or what do you require.  Of course everyone wants a great work envoironment, but that is stating the obvious.  Try saying something with challenges and a place to grow for not only yourself but the company as a whole.

  • If you could change one thing about your previous job, what would it be?

Avoid using people in your answer.  Say something about how you would have prefered your own office or to have a seat by the window.  This question opens doors to bash your old company and boss.  You want to stay away from negative responses.

  • Tell me about yourself.

Avoid talking about personal things such as family or likes and dislikes.  Use job related experiences or events that emphasize your talents and skills.

  • What was the last book you read or movie that you saw and how did it affect you?

This question is designed to not only see your likes and dislikes, but also to see if you try to imporve your knowledge in the field.

  • What is the worst thing you have heard about this company?

This question is to test the applicant's ability to think on his or her feet.

  • What would you say if so far, I told you you were doing terrible during this interview?

This also is to test the ability of the applicant to think on his or her feet.  Notice that the employer said "if."  This is more of a reaction question.

Make sure to listen to what you are being asked and how it is being asked to you.  It is common for applicants to think of answers to questions before they are completely asked.  It is better to relax and listen so that the question can be properly answered.
