Top notch questions to ask employers

Published

on

Why let employers do all the asking?  Throw a few questions of your own out there so you can get a better feel for the job and company as well as the person hiring you.  It is also important to ask a few questions to show your interest in the company and the open job position.

  1. What are the company's strengths compared to its competition?
  2. What are the company's weaknesses compared to its competition?
  3. How does management view the role and importance of this department and this position?
  4. What is the organization's plan for the next five years?
  5. How does this role fit in?
  6. What do you enjoy most about this company?
  7. What are the means of communication that employees use to communicate with one another to accomplish their work?
  8. How will my leadership responsibilities and performance be measured and by whom?
  9. What are the day-to-day responsibilities of this job?
  10. What are some of the key characteristics of an employee who fits well with this job?
  11. What are some of the skills and abilities necessary for someone to succeed in this job?
  12. What kind of work can I expect to be doing as I start off working here?
  13. Is there room for promotions and advancement within the company?
  14. How does one advance in the company?
  15. Can you describe an ideal employee?
  16. What is your organization's policy on transfers to other cities?
  17. How does this role support the rest of the company?
  18. What can I do for you as a follow-up?
  19. Is this a new position? If not, what did the previous employee go on to do?
  20. Who does this position report to? If I am offered the position, can I meet him/her?
  21. How many people work in this office/department?
  22. What is the typical work week?
  23. What don't you like about working here and what would you change?
  24. If I am extended a job offer, how soon would you like me to start?
  25. When can I expect to hear from you?

Make sure your questions are straightforward and inquire specific information.  You are not trying to trick or probe the employer for top secret information. You are just trying to get a better sense of the company.  Also be aware that as they ask you questions, they may ask you similar ones, so be prepared.  Do not ask questions that you should already know the answer to.  Research about the company before the interview is key.
