Coping With Stress

Read the following advice on coping with stress at work.

Be aware of the warning signs

  • Feeling anxious or irritable
  • Loss if interest in work
  • Problems sleeping
  • Trouble with concentration
  • Headaches
  • Social withdrawal
  • Problems outside of the work place i.e loss of sex drive
  • Using drugs and alcohol to cope
Suggested ways to avoid stress
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat well and don't skip meals
  • Do not drink excessive amounts of alcohol
  • Get enough sleep
  • Create a work schedule with priorities and planned breaks
  • Leave a bit earlier in the morning to avoid being late and causing yourself added stress
  • Break projects into smaller tasks
  • Delegate responsability to other employees
  • Be willing to compromise and in turn resolve conflict positively
  • Resist perfectionism, just aim to do your best
  • Flip your negative thinking and reward yourself for accomplisments, even if nobody else does
  • Connect with others at work- communication is the key to a successful and harmonious workplace
  • Look for humour in a situation
  • Take time away- take a 5 minute break outside or alone in the staff room
