Personal safety: arriving early or leaving work late

With the seasons changing and the days getting shorter, it is not uncommon to arrive at work while it is still dark, or even leaving work when it is dark.  Walking to our cars after work is just a habit and a necessary step in completing our day, but we often do not pay attention to our surroundings.  During the day personal safety is not as big of an issue because of the sunlight and activity that is going on around you.  However, at late hours and with the nights getting darker earlier, it is important to take notice of what is going on around you. The walk from your office door to your car door may be short, but you would never believe what could happen in a blink of an eye.

Protect yourself by:

  • having your keys our and ready before you leave the building.
  • do not text or chat on the phone so as to distract yourself from your surroundings.
  • walk with a co-worker whenever possible.
  • have a friend walk you to your car.
  • avoid walking in dark areas, stay close to street lamps.
  • avoid taking out your wallet, money or other valuables until you have safely reached your car.
  • stay alert.
  • trust your instincts.

These may seem simple, but often in the midst of a hurry we forget to pay attention to the smaller details. Many of these tips apply to other settings as well such as your college campus or neighborhood. Letting a close friend or family member know your whereabouts is a good idea as well so that there is someone who knows the last place you were located.  However, disclosing such information via social media should be expressed wisely.  You never know who could get ahold of that information. With that in mind, there are some ways that social media and apps can help you in times of need.
