Personal safety on campus

Between night classes, visiting your friends in the other dorm or going for an evening jog, the university campus is a popular place for activity, even at night.  Being aware of your surroundings is an essential part of living college life.

Protect yourself:

  • stay alert.
  • walk with a friend when possible.
  • avoid dark alleys or shortcuts that are not frequently visited after dark.
  • located the nearest police station.
  • know the number for the campus police.
  • avoid bringing valuables with you.
  • use the campus bus if it is still operating.
  • trust your instincts.

Also, be aware of what information you share and who you share it with.  Posting your whereabouts on social media sites is not the best idea, especially if your profiles are public.  Sharing other information such as your address or telephone number is risky as well because it provides and opening for a stranger to access other information that pertains to you.  However, there are some ways that social media sites or applications can help you in a time of need.

Before arriving to school or going out for the night, look into what your college has to offer for your safety.  Every school may have different rules or services, but there is always some form of security for  students.
