Phone interviews

Phone interviews are primarily used to screen a candidate before a formal job interview.  Phone interviews let the employer know if it is worth his or her time to invite the candidate back for a more formal, in-person interview.  This is especially handy if the interview is long distance, that way they can save time and money.  It is important to always be prepared for a phone interview because you never know when an employer may decide to contact you.  Being prepared will help during the actual interview which may feel a little uncomfortable since it is not the usual form of interviewing.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for a phone interview

  • Pretend it is like a normal interview.
  • Have your resume handy.
  • Have a pen and paper nearby in case you need to take notes.
  • Go to a quiet room or area so you can focus.
  • Make sure you’re in an area where you get excellent service to prevent any mishaps.
  • Practice.

During the phone interview

  • Do not eat, drink, chew gum, smoke etc…
  • Smile.
  • Speak slowly and clearly.
  • Give short and precise answers.
  • Listen.

Remember

  • The point of this interview is to set up a face-to-face interview.
  • If you get parched, it is ok to get some water.
  • Breathe.
  • Thank the person interviewing you for his or her time.
