Xavier University

Cincinnati, OH

Grace Raynor is a junior at Xavier University graduating in 2014.  She is a Nursing major and was part of the swim team for her first two years at the university.

What was your first day like?

"I was really excited and nervous on my first day. I accidentally sat down in the wrong classroom for my first class which was embarrassing. It was mostly just weird because I didn't really know what to do with myself because of the change of schedule."

How did you adjust from high school to college?

"Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart (Omaha, NE) really prepared me well for college. The biggest adjustment for me was not seeing my family everyday and having to figure things out on my own."

Why did you choose Xavier University?

"I chose Xavier mostly for the swim team. The coaches and swimmers were the nicest and most supportive that I had met. I also really liked the school, it had small class sizes and it just seemed like an automatic fit."

What is your favorite part about Xavier?

"My favorite part about Xavier is the people. The students, teachers and even the cafeteria are so kind. Everybody really cares about how everyone else is doing. The nursing program is probably a close second. I have really enjoyed the professors and the clinical opportunities."

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?

"It's going to be hard and it's a big change from high school. Get yourself into a schedule right away so you don't end up wasting all of your free time. Try to get involved in things. One of my biggest issues was homesickness. But once you get into a rhythm you start making friends and it's a great experience."
