Video interviews

Technology has made long distance interviews possible and more cost efficient.  Along with Skype interviews and phone interviews, video interviews have their place in the industry as well.  A video interview uses exactly that, video to interview a potential candidate. During the interview, candidates are asked the same set of questions and send their answers in via video.  This way, employers have the opportunity to replay and review who they are interviewing.  This makes it a little easier on the employer so he or she can take notes and easily compare one candidate from another.

Similar to a Skype or phone interview, a video interview may seem a little uncomfortable and out of the norm for you.  However, it is not much different than a traditional interview.  The basic rules of preparation and professionalism apply.

Remember to:

  • Prepare and gather your information before hand (resume).
  • Practice beforehand.
  • Dress professionally.
  • Follow directions.
  • Answer the questions clearly and concisely.
  • Look at the camera.
  • Adjust the light.
  • Resolve technical issues before.
  • Breathe.
  • Smile.

Most of these tips you have seen before.  That is because the general rules for interviewing apply to almost every type of interview.  The specific differences for video interviews are:

  • Look at the camera.
  • Adjust the light.
  • Make sure technical issues are resolved.
